NFL’s Essay Writing Tips: What To Read Before You Start, From The NFL Guide
By Ryan DunleavyWhen it comes to the process of writing a story, a lot of writers get frustrated.
But not everybody wants to write a story with words.
You know the drill: You write a paragraph or two and you’re done.
But when you’re trying to get your story out into the world, it can be tough.
You’re trying, and it can seem like a fool’s errand.
There are a few ways you can improve your writing, and I’m going to show you five ways to get started.
Let’s start with the simple.
Write in an easy-to-understand format.
You can start with something simple and then add more words.
Say something like, “I’ve been a writer for two decades, and this is the first time I’ve ever written a story.”
Then add more, and so on.
For example, you can add a sentence like, “[I]ve been a contributor to several publications, including the Boston Globe, New York Times, Washington Post, Chicago Tribune, Los Angeles Times, and New York Daily News.”
Write in a topic area that you’re familiar with.
If you have a specific subject you’re writing about, such as sports, that’s a good starting point.
You may not be able to write in every sports area, but that’s okay.
For example, I know a lot about the history of the sport of soccer, and when I first started, I didn’t know how to write about it.
Then I started writing about soccer, which is much easier than soccer.
If I wanted to write soccer, I could start by talking about the sport, but then I could go into a little bit more depth about how soccer works.
Then you could add more details.
You could add, “And this was my first soccer experience.”
Then, you could use a different subject and talk about that subject in a different way.
Say, “My first soccer goal was to score a goal in the first half of the World Cup in 1994.”
It would be very similar to a paragraph about soccer.
Then, add some humor.
For instance, you might add, “[In a] game between the New England Revolution and the Portland Timbers, a referee called a foul that was called back on the Revolution because the referee had been standing up.
The referee was trying to keep the game fair and neutral, and he had no idea how to call a foul when standing up.”
When you’re talking about soccer in a sports context, you may want to add some puns.
You might say, “The Portland Timbers were awarded a penalty kick when the referee was standing up on the sidelines.”
You could add something about the weather.
You’ll use an analogy, such the weather was like the weather in a baseball park.
You wouldn’t want to use an analog, because it’s an analog of the weather, but you can use it.
It could be something like “The weather in Portland was hot and humid and very humid.”
You can add something interesting.
This is especially useful if you’re going to talk about someone you know, because you can say, “[The soccer player] was born in the Dominican Republic.”
Or, “They’re Dominican.”
The last thing to do is put your thoughts in the reader’s mind.
Say what you’re thinking.
For me, it was, “A soccer player from the Dominican was born and raised in the United States.”
Then I would say something like this, “This is a great story about the evolution of the game.”
If you’re not a writer, try some of the techniques I mentioned above, but make sure you get your subject and the subject’s place in the story clear.
You don’t want it to feel like a series of paragraphs or a paragraph and a sentence.
Then, start with a short paragraph and go from there.
I found the process easier if I just started out with a paragraph, and then I would add more.
Then after a few paragraphs, I would start adding words and paragraphs.
Then try to use some of those words that you’ve used before.
You’ve already talked about the basics.
It’s time to go deeper.
Write a paragraph that you can see how it sounds.
You will probably want to include a summary of the story, which you can read before you start writing the article.
Write more.
If it feels like you’re struggling to write the paragraph right now, try to put the entire thing together with just a few words.
This will help you to get the story across more clearly.
For the example I’m showing you, it sounds like I have to go into more detail, but it actually sounds like the entire story is already written.
That’s the power of a summary.
Write about a sport.
For this, you’ll want to write something about a topic that you know well.
For baseball,
